You’ve gone through three months of the New Year. You feel it’s gone too fast. You go through your list of resolutions and start ticking off those that have been done. Is there nothing to tick off? What happened? Three months have gone by and there’s nothing to show for it in terms of done resolutions. You’ve gone through this exercise year after year with the same dire results. Here are some suggestions to keep this from recurring?
Keep the list small and simple at the start. Don’t aim too high. Becoming a millionaire is a nice objective but may not be realistic if you are earning 20 thousand a year and have 15 grand in loans. Go for easy to do objectives. “Meet new people” or “wake up early” are examples of small goals that you can achieve effortlessly.
Set mini-goals for your long range plans. “Losing 20 pounds’ is a worthy objective but cannot be done overnight. It may take several months of strict dieting and exercising before you can reach your goal. People tend to lose sight of goals if they are too far in the future. It is better to set up goals that can be achieved in a short time. “Lose a pound a month” is a closer goal that can be achieved in a short time. Accomplishing a goal gives you a sense of accomplishment and builds up the impetus for the next objective.
Write down your resolutions and beside it, list down the activities that will help you meet those resolutions. “Meeting new people” is simple but if you stay secluded and avoid social gatherings, this simple resolution will always remain a resolution. Making attempts to strike a conversation with people at the bus stop or in the train are small ways that will help you get out of your shell.
Review the activities and see that they are realistic and can be done. Keep in mind that these are activities and not resolutions. Don’t get carried away and put down activities which are impossible to do. Doing physical activities may not be a good idea if you have a bad back.
Look for other sources that can help you meet those resolutions. Confide to your family and friends what your resolutions are and ask them to help you along the way. If you want to lose weight, your family and friends will remind you every time you deviate and start eating more than you should. If you feel an urge to eat in excess, call and talk to them. Join health and weight reducer clubs. Most if not all the members in the club have the same goals as you and they will be watching over one another. Don’t despair. It’s hard to start but once you gain the momentum, it may get easier down the road. Be resolute. You made those resolutions with the aim of improving yourself. Make the effort to follow through and progress.
