Passing up Great Opportunities

Maybe at that time you thought there would be plenty of chances to get a well-paying job that offers hands-on experience and the chance to travel. Then you discovered that it wasn’t destined to happen, at least for now. Now you’re haunted by the job you didn’t take, or even the promotion you didn’t ask for. You cure endlessly and just kick yourself in the shin constantly. But before you get truly harsh on yourself, figure out why you truly missed your shot. Is it possible a simple email to your boss or to an HR manager could get you considered for future opportunities?

If the answer is no, then give yourself some tough love? Whenever you start stewing over a fabulous career path you’ve missed, stop. Take a deep breath and tell yourself that it’s over. Repeat that line as many times as possible because there is just no way to turn back the clock. This attitude, while harsh, helps you heal more quickly. When something is closed, fixed, or done, that’s when you’ll get past the regret. Sulking won’t get you anywhere. In fact, you slide further behind because you haven’t become proactive about past mistakes.

Then, mine the regret for information. After all, if you can’t stop thinking about something, it probably has some pretty useful data. Ask yourself what about the alternative is more appealing to you. What is it you’re missing and desperately longing for? For instance, if you’re bumming that you didn’t go after a promotion at work, what has changed that makes you want it now more than ever? Have your skills and confidence grown since then? If you wake up each day wishing you’d taken that position at the promising company, ask again what about that other decision is better. Are you looking for the excitement in the hustle and bustle in the metropolis?

Once you’ve answered all these questions and clarified what you’ll be looking for, you’ll be poised to jump when the next big, and possibly even better, opportunity comes along. This may even happen at a less than ideal time, but you’re all the better for it. Regret comes up over missed opportunities but you can overcome that by the awareness that while you may have missed that one, there are still others bound to come your way. Don’t live your life with ifs because it’s easy to daydream about the thrilling life you would have had if you’d chosen a different path. That’s why the stuff you didn’t do make for such powerful regrets. They never get to leave the fantasy stage. Since the details are unclear, you fill in the blanks with things you wanted. It’s not limited by anything except your imagination.

So, it’s time to give yourself a reality check. You can still experience both the good and bad in the choices you didn’t make. If you’ve decided that you still want the change, well, what are you waiting for? Just because you regret old decisions doesn’t mean you can’t make new ones. You can only live with one choice at a time, and you can make that other choice now.
