| No matter how gutsy you are, lately you may have been playing it safe, chugging away at work that’s gotten stale or sticking to the same style for too long a time. Blame this on the stressful climate: the bleak job market, downsizing, and bank failures. When you’re anxious, your instinct is to stay put. It’s comforting, but that can cut you off from opportunities. Instead of shifting gears and moving forward, you’re stuck in neutral. Things are actually starting to improve, though, and you’re probably getting antsy. Getting restless is great and they key to setting change in motion is to start small. These things are designed to have a domino effect in your life. They’ll expose you to new information and attitudes, which in turn will inspire new experiences and get you unstuck. One reason people get stuck is you lose sight of what motivates you. With nothing to steer toward, you drift by on autopilot. For the next few weeks of your life, make a note of any moments when you feel super energetic, from a yoga class to a great discussion with a friend. Then look back at what you wrote and arrange your schedule to incorporate more of those activities. Yes, even if this means dropping other less important things in your life. The more time you devote to experiences you truly love, the freer and happier you’ll be. Here are other ways to change your routine and breathe new life into it so that you’ll stop feeling trapped: 1. Switch up the way you fix yourself because this can affect your frame of mind. A more playful look can also make you more energetic and carefree. 2. Change your bed’s position and put it in a place you’re not used to. You’ll have a fresh perspective as soon as you wake up. 3. Go to a person you respect but who has a different perspective on things. Ask him about the books he finds interesting and read one. 4. Ask a colleague you’re friendly with but haven’t hung out with socially to go out for drinks. It will be interesting to talk to each other outside the work environment. Plus, this opens doors to meeting new people in his circle. 5. Go to a concert that plays music you don’t really listen to. Even if you hate the tunes, you’ll be exposed to a crowd that’s far from your normal social set and, thus, sort of intriguing. 6. Volunteer to take a turn on an interesting project because planning events can be satisfying. 7. Think back of the places you used to hang out a lot in and go there. This will put you in a mindset you were in back then. 8. Reconnect with a friend you haven’t spent much time with lately. 9. While buying new clothes, ask a friend to pick out an outfit they think would look good on you but isn’t your usual style. 10. Move your laptop to another room so the change of atmosphere will also change the way you work. |
