Fine Tune Your Senses

Yummier food and sweeter music. Rev up your sense just by taking care of yourself more. Imagine yourself lying on a hammock as you listen to the waves pound on the shore. The smell of the ocean and the feel of the breeze against your skin feel fantastic. But what if your senses deprived you of all these? The problem is, most of you take your senses for granted and that’s not a very smart thing to do because life is a lot less interesting when they’re not operating at peak capacity. But thanks to blaring music, long stretches on the computer and even the occasional nasty sunburn, you may be slowly and imperceptibly chipping away at your five functions.

Your eyes may be tiny, but they’re actually very complex. Vision occurs when light reflected off an object enters the eye. The nerves send the signal to your brain and then you see it. If you have perfect vision, you can make out what a normal-sighted person can see from 20 feet away. Some lucky folks can see more. Smoking, shunning sunglasses, and aging will all contribute to less-than-stellar vision, but you actually have a way to protect your peepers. First of all, stay a safe distance from your TV and consume foods that are high on luteine and beta carotene. These antioxidants can be found in carrots, and you all know that this veggie helps stave off sight degeneration.

You also need to take care of your sense of taste and smell as well. Even the ripest, juiciest apple will taste like cardboard if you’re nose is as stuffed as a men’s bar on ladies night. That’s because only 10,000 of your taste buds pick up only four basic flavors: sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. Your body relies on your olfactory sense to fill in the rest. Unfortunately, cigarette smoke can kill both your taste buds and scent receptors. Take care of your nose by avoiding strong acidic scents. Exercise your sense of smell by smelling varieties of perfume and picking them apart.

For your touch, you should know that you lose about one percent of this sense each year as soon as you hit the age of 20. The damage can be accelerated if you play rough with your skin. Apply cream and never forget the sunscreen every time you step out of your house. Indulge in a massage when you can because they don’t just feel toe-curlingly good, but these help keep skin healthy.

Take care of your hearing too. When your favorite band’s stratospheric riffs travel across the radio waves and out your speakers, the vibration actually travels down your ear canal. The sad part is that most everything you’re exposed to can hurt the delicate hairs lining your ear canal. Preserve what you still have by lowering down the volume. Instead, try to play close attention to every instrument you hear in your favorite song. Then, test yourself by telling which is which. By training your ears to single out sounds, you can sharpen this sense.
