Everyone at one time or another has experienced being angry. It may be a mild irritation or an intense fury. Anger can be sparked by many things, such as types of people, events, or memories. Most anger starts as a minor altercation and builds up as both parties end up in a heated argument. A simple traffic accident can become a humongous problem if we are not careful in controlling our emotions.
Anger is a natural and productive emotion. If directed properly, we can use the emotion to release our pent up energies and tensions. However, when we lose control, anger can become destructive. It can lead to broken homes, physical harm, ruined relationships and even death.We cannot totally eliminate anger from our systems since it is inherent in our nature but we should learn to control it. Here are some ways to consider the next time you get angry.
Take a deep breath and count to ten. Deep breathing helps calm your nerves. Counting to ten gives you time to reflect and thiink out your actions. Drinking water will help soothe your frayed emotions. Try to avoid alcohol since it serves as a stimulant and tends to increase your blood pressure and heighten your feelings. If you have a chance, wash your face or take a bath. Doing activities not related to the cause for your anger may help you forget or bring down your initial feelings.
Do not speak immdiately when you are angry. Try to temper down before saying anything. Words spoken at the immediate moment of anger are not thought out carefully and can be very hurtful to others. You may say something that you will regret later on. Keep quiet and look away from the person or incident that made you angry. Divert your attention to something else. This will take your mind off the immediate problems and hopefully help you cool off.
Listen to what people say in an objective manner. People may be saying correct comments but you might end up taking it personally and aggravate the situation. If they are saying irresponsible angry remarks, try to ignore them. Those are remarks said in anger and may not reflect the true nature of the person. Listem to them calmly and assert yourself in a positive manner. A good approach is to pray at that moment.Your focus is diverted to the prayers. Hopefully the prayers also bring a change of atmosphere.
If your anger still persists after several hours, try exercising, taking a walk or listening to music. Walking exerts effort and whatever tension or stress was still within you may be dissipated by the energy you exert in walking. Aside from that, you attention is drawn to the scenery along your walk path. Listening to music does not exert effort but music has a soothing effect on our nerves. Choose whatever music makes you feel comfortable and relaxed.
Understand that people in a high state of emotion can be unreasonable and demanding at times. Allow them time to cool off. Realize the severity of the situation and take steps to resolve it satisfactorily. Learn to forget the cause of the anger.
