Do You Have Enough Money for a Rainy Day

You hear people say they never earn enough to make ends meet. I think people somehow can get through on a daily basis with their earnings. The bigger question is whether we have stored away any money for that rainy day. Friends and relatives are good to have but they might not be around when that rainy day comes around. Follow the ant and start that storing habit too. It will come in handy during critical emergencies.  Here are some suggestions on how you can save some money.

Don’t overspend. Don’t go on a whimsical binge just because you feel money in your pockets. Adjust your spending habits and track closely where your money goes each month. Cut down on items that are non-essential. That’s the easy part. What happens if your earnings are not even enough to pay for the essentials. Identify the essentials and see what alternatives or options you can do to cut down on their expenses.

Take electricity and gas. This may be a big cost factor. Are the appliances, like air-conditioner or heater on too long? Put an off-on timer on the appliances so they can automatically switch off and on at intervals. Timers can also be placed on lights so they can turn off at specific times. Sometimes lights are left on during the day and that’s an obvious waste. Test the wirings regularly for shorts.

Water is a utility that is necessary in every house. Ensure your faucets are tight. Slow drips will cost money in the long run.  Monitor your water usage monthly. If the water usage goes up, test the pipes for leaks.

People tend to overlook potential savings in utilities since they feel they can’t do without them. So, continue using the utilities but scrutinize on how you use those utilities.

Another cost item might be transportation. If you are using a car, think of ways to save on it’s use. Car pools and not using the car once a week became popular when gasoline prices soared. If the destination is not far, walk the distance. You save on gas and parking fees and also keep physically fit. Public transportation, like buses, trams, and trains can be just as effective and efficient in commuting from one place to another.

Keep hold of the receipts and review them. You might notice some small items that can be cut off without impacting your lifestyle. For example, I noticed I had several cups of coffee daily. I felt I could cut down on my consumption and still enjoy a mug now and then.

Before you know it , you will be saving a bit here and there Put your savings in a bank or invest it in some form that will deter you from getting the money arbitrarily. Sometimes, I use the savings to buy short term or endowment insurance. When the insurance contract matures, I end up with a tidy sum which I can recycle into some other investment or use for that vital emergency that suddenly came up. Having trouble making ends meet?
