Maintaining the Bond

Relationships are hard enough as it is, and it gets even harder when you don’t have much time for each other. If you really want to work at what you have, you need to make that extra effort. Think about why you fell in love in the first place, and sometimes, you need to maintain that spark or else what you’ll have will turn into friendship. Sure, you need to see your partner as your friend, but he is also more than overwhelming for you.

Find a balance and make time to spend with each other. If you can’t do this often enough, make sure that the little times you have together are times well spent. Talk about how things are at work, tease each other, and make him laugh. This is couple time for you, and if you have children to worry about, the few minutes that you have before bedtime is crucial as well. The point here is to make your partner feel that he is always on your mind. A good practice would be to leave little notes. If he has to go somewhere on a business trip, leave short notes on his briefcase and tell him that you can’t wait to see him get back. That way, you don’t sound too demanding. Instead, you’re the supportive one he can come home to. The notes you’ll give will reinforce the connection you’ve already established. And when he finds them in the most unlikely places, this will seem like a very sweet surprise.

Another great idea would be to make a playlist. Back in the 80s, a mixed tape was one of the sweetest things someone can do for you. Since the dawn of the portable music players, the tape is already considered passé. But even if this is the case, you can make something that comes close to a mixed tape. Get his pod and create a special playlist just for him. Make sure that you include the songs he enjoys, otherwise, listening to it will be more of a chore. Then, throw in some songs that you know will remind him of you. These don’t have to be cheesy tunes. In fact, anything goes as long as it’s something that he can relate to you.

Or, you can always give him a unique present. Remember, gifts don’t have to be expensive and elaborate. It can be based on a passing conversation or something that he needs. If it’s specific to a talk you once had, it will be able to hit home. He can think of you every time he sees it, and, he’ll definitely appreciate your thoughtfulness. Remember, if you constantly show affection, your man can’t help but reciprocate. It may take time, especially when you’re really the more affectionate one. But when done consistently, he will be able to pick up the habit eventually. People like being appreciated, and when they know they’re with someone who realizes that, they will do everything to keep that person. Let him know that you’re a treasure worth keeping.
